‘THEY CAME FOR MY HUSBAND’ - Delft family in lucky escape after friend survives shooting in their bakkie

A DELFT family is lucky to be alive after their friend was shot while seated in their bakkie with their children inside the vehicle.

In what is believed to have been an attempt on her husband’s life, the traumatised mother explained that she and her husband went out for the day to celebrate her birthday on Tuesday and had arranged for their pal to take their bakkie to bring the kids home in the evening.

When they arrived home to meet the friend, a grey BMW pulled up and opened fire on the driver’s side of the bakkie, with their four children and the bra’s two laaities in the vehicle.

The mother explained: “My husband and I left with my car and the bakkie was at home.

“We asked my husband’s friend to throw petrol in the bakkie as it is parked outside and to pick up the children. By the time he arrived, we were already back home.

“We stood outside, my car was parked on the pavement and he was parked next to us in the bakkie and we were talking while still seated inside of the vehicles.

“A car pulled up from behind us and someone got out and ran between the two cars and just started shooting.

“They shot him in the cheek and neck. I got such a big shock and checked if the children are all OK and we realised that my husband’s friend was shot.

“We rushed him to the day hospital where he is recovering.

“My children, including my baby, and the friend’s children were all in the car with their windows down but thankfully they are OK.

“It seems like the person came for my husband and thought that he was in the driver’s seat of the bakkie but actually he was sitting in my car and wanted to shoot him. It seems like they planned and waited for us.”

When asked why she believes her businessman husband was targeted, she said it was out of jealousy.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that Delft police registered an attempted murder case following the shooting incident at 10.30pm.

Van Wyk reported: “SAPS members attended Delft Day Hospital to attend to a shooting incident complaint where a 49-year-old victim received medical treatment for gunshot wounds to his neck and cheek.

“According to reports the victim and friends sat in his car when approached by two unidentified males who without reason started shooting at them. The victim was taken to hospital by a family member.

“The motive for this shooting incident forms part of the police investigation and no arrests have been made yet.”
