Five Bashews diewe arrested after hijacked delivery truck tracked across Kaap

FIVE kooldrank diewe were busted on Tuesday after hijacking a truck in Manenberg and trying to sell the stock in Eerste River.  

A coordinated operation between Metro Police and SAPS ended in five arrests on Tuesday after officers tracked a hijacked delivery truck across Manenberg, Khayelitsha, and Eerste River.

Metro Police spokesperson Superintendent Ruth Solomons said officers received information early on Tuesday morning that a Toyota Hino truck had been hijacked in Manenberg.

The skelms stole a vrag Bashews and were then tracked to Khayelitsha, where they were spotted switching the stock to a geel trokkie before stopping at a shop in Eerste River, where they were busted at around 12.30pm. 

Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala said: “Members of the Makhaza SAPS Hijacking Team, together with Metro Police, swooped in and arrested [the suspects].”

Four Zimbabwean men and one Bangladeshi man, aged between 28 and 41, were taken into custody. 

The stolen goods valued at approximately R150 000 were seized and returned to the rightful owner. 

Police also confiscated the truck and six cellphones for further investigation, which may shed light on whether the suspects are linked to other hijackings in the area.

Gwala confirmed that the suspects were detained at Kleinvlei SAPS and will appear in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court once charged. 

In a separate incident, members of Operation Shanela II raided a Pelican Park smokkie afte receiving information of an unregistered liquor outlet in Peppershrike Street, New Horizon.

Upon arrival at the address, they confiscated a total of 404 bottles of assorted liquor and arrested a 32-year-old male for dealing in liquor without a license.

The suspect will appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court, once charged.

Meanwhile, in Ravensmead a 30-year-old male was arrested for possession of an imitation firearm and illegal possession of ammunition. The suspect will appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court once charged.

In Heideveld, a 20-year-old male was arrested for possession of drugs after being gevang with 50 mandrax tablets and 26 grams of compressed crystals of tik. He will appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s court, once charged. 

In an unrelated incident, Anti-Gang Unit members conducted a search at a house in Fraser Lane, Forest Village in Blue Downs. They found a 9mm pistol under a mattress and registered an inquiry for further investigation. The firearm was handed in as an exhibit.

Six cellphones were found on the suspects.
