ELEVEN Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) cops made their first appearance at the Athlone Magistrates Court on Friday in connection with the death of an alleged gangster from Manenberg.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said that the accused are charged with the alleged murder of alleged gang member Wade Price and the assault of his friends in Manenberg on 4 December.

Ipid spokesperson Lizzy Suping said: “It is alleged that the deceased died during the interrogation and questioning of possible suspects, as part of an enquiry into the murder that occurred near the Athlone Magistrate Court last week.

“Police alleged that the deceased complained of an ear pain and collapsed. IPID’s investigation determined that the deceased cause of death was as a result of unnatural causes. More information will be revealed during trial.”

The accused are facing charges of murder, four counts of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, four counts of kidnapping and one count of torture.

The court heard that four of the complaints were taken to Manenberg police station. Three were released, however Price was taken to an address in the area along with the cops.

According to reports, Price entered the property alive with the members, but moments later emergency services and other police officials arrived and that was when Price was removed from the property.

The case was postponed to 15 December for a formal bail application for accused 7, 9, and 11 and bail applications for the rest of the accused was postponed to 18 December.
