AFTER an eventful year in which he claimed social media viral status, Officer Boy Makutu parked 2025 by scooping the City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security Directorate’s ‘Officer of the Year’ award.

Makutu made headlines this year after arresting a drunk driver in September.

The driver was seen in the widely-shared video telling Makutu not to touch him after the officer instructed him to turn around to make an arrest.

According to officials, the man was stopped after being seen driving recklessly on N1 outbound onto the Durban Road flyover.

After he was pulled over by the traffic cop, the man, who was later charged with driving under the influence, instead gets into a bekgeveg with the officer before getting physical.

As the officer calls for back up the alleged drunk driver shouts at the officer saying “hy’s f*kken swart man” and “give my keys” before assaulting the officer.

The driver went on to accuse the Makutu of assaulting him and calls him a p**s.

The driver was later arrested for driving dik gesuip, reckless and negligent driving and assault.

Safety and Security boss JP Smith said: “Officer Makutu embodies the very essence of Safety and Security. He serves with dedication and humility, and while he is very soft-spoken, his service record shows that he is a force to be reckoned with.

“I commend him and every other member and volunteer acknowledged at our awards events.

“And, while we pause to tip our hats to those nominated, I also want to extend my sincere appreciation to the thousands of others in our Directorate who show up for their communities day after day, often at great personal cost and sacrifice.”

The driver accused the officer of assaulting him.
