What is Christmas without a trifle? But imagine all that sweetness in a song.
Legendary local DJ and producer Calvin Peters, better known as Uncle Cal, teamed up with singing sensation Tracey Carter to release Cape Town At Christmas Trifle Remix this festive season en dis a treffer.
Carter originally released Cape Town at Christmas on her 2014 holiday album Trimmings and Trifle.
The song was inspired by Tracey’s experience of spending a white Christmas in the United States, something she had imagined since childhood thanks to snowy Christmas movies and jingle-bell holiday music.
But even while sipping hot chocolate and making snow angels, she found herself longing deeply for a Kaapse Christmas.
When she returned home that January, the Adderley Street lights were still glowing. Driving beneath them, the opening lyric came to her instantly: “Cape Town at Christmas is one you can’t miss”, moments later followed another iconic line: “Be at the lights down Adderley Street, and the fifteen kinds of meat.”
Uncle Cal first heard the number in 2020 and immediately connected with it. Drawn to its authenticity and its celebration of Cape Town’s festive spirit, he approached Tracey with the idea of creating a remix.
With the number refined in the lab, Uncle Cal took to his social media saying: “Festive greetings my mase kinnes.
“You know, for years… we have been listening to Boney M, os luister na Mariah Carey and all of this music that we grew up on and we sing about things that we cannot relate to.
“In 2020, toe discover ek a song called Cape Town At Christmas by Tracey Carter which was actually recorded originally in 2014. I loved it so much so I decided to remix it, gooi it in ‘n bak en mix it and this is the Trifle Remix.”
