COPS came under fire in Elsies River on Tuesday as a police vehicle was struck by a bullet while officers responded to a shooting in Clark Estate.
The shocking incident unfolded on Old Stellenbosch Road when police rushed to reports of gunfire and were met by a hostile skare, with shots ringing out and one bullet hitting a police vehicle on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala said: “Elsies River Police attended a complaint of a shooting in progress at Old Stellenbosch Road, Clark Estate.
“Upon arrival, they saw a group of people gathered then they heard gunshots coming from the crowd.
“A police motor vehicle was damaged by a bullet during this incident. Police registered a case of attempted murder, attack on police and public violence for further investigation.”
Meanwhile, the Acting Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety in the Western Cape Tertius Simmers strongly condemned the brazen and reckless act of geweld.
Simmers said: “Any attack on law enforcement is an attack on the rule of law and represents a direct threat to the safety and security of our communities.
“These acts of violence seek to undermine the authority of the State and endanger those who work tirelessly to protect our residents. Such behaviour will not be tolerated.”
He further urged mense to work closely with cops by coming forward with information that may assist in the investigation.
Ward Councillor Charles Esau also condemned the incident and appealed with the community to be careful and safe and said he was against people attacking cops.
Esau stated: “I ask our communities to respect our law enforcement agencies as they are there to keep the area safe and to ensure that everyone is safe.”
