THE community of Kraaifontein has access to police services made easier with the launch of their mobile community centre, which forms part of the crime prevention and violence reduction strategies in the community.
Residents will now be able to report crime, certify documents and get all their services which they would get from the police station on four wheels including a holding cell.
Gavin Riddles, Acting Chairperson for the Kraaifontein Community Police Forum, said that the mobile community centre will be launched today and will be utilised in all policing sectors.
However, they have earmarked the volatile area of Wallacedene, which is one of the major crime contributing areas
Riddles said: “The need was addressed way back prior to the establishment of the Sector 1 Scottsdene Base Camp with the discussion for a new police station or the improvement of the current one.
“The purpose will be to service areas far from the station and also to ease the current burden of the main station with daily large volumes of certifications as well as commissioning of documents.
“It will be a benefit to the community and its presence will also deter and prevent some incidents. All areas will benefit from this centre as it can be moved whenever the need arises or for special needs. It's a great step in the right direction and on par with our Community Safety Plan for the term. We want to launch this Mobile Community Centre as part of our Crime Prevention and Violence Reduction strategies.
“It will definitely help with crime prevention and better service delivery to the vulnerable. It's state of the art, with space to take statements as well as a holding cell. This is part of our continuous desire to change community fear into safer areas and to broader community partnerships.”
“We are also planning to roll out Community Commissioners Initiative utilising Commissioners of Oath to assist SAPS with the tasks at hand.
“Taking back the streets is our core objective and will also work with schools in the area to roll out Safer Schools Projects.
“The Community Centre will be at one of our schools in the gang problem areas.”
