COMMUNITY members are being urged to lace up their takkies and stand together in the fight against cancer when Relay For Life returns to Mitchells Plain this weekend.
The much-anticipated CANSA Relay For Life event will take place from Saturday, 7 February, at 6pm until Sunday, 8 February, at 6am at Westridge High School, bringing families, survivors, and supporters together for an overnight celebration of life, remembrance, and hope.
The annual event aims to raise cancer awareness, while honouring survivors, remembering loved ones lost to the disease and encouraging communities to unite against the illness that continues to affect thousands of South African families.
CANSA has also announced its 2026 South African Relay For Life Global Heroes of Hope - a group of cancer survivors and caregivers who share their personal journeys to inspire others facing similar battles.
The Heroes of Hope, include Izak Bellingan, Lavona Spiers, Vivienne van der Schuur and Elza-Marie van Lille, who each represent resilience, courage and the importance of support during difficult times.
The Heroes of Hope play a vital role in strengthening cancer survivorship programmes and raising awareness about early detection and support services.
Through sharing their stories, they aim to encourage those currently fighting cancer and remind communities that no one has to face the disease alone.
Organisers are encouraging local businesses, schools, families and community groups to form teams and take part in the event.
Team entry costs R1 000 for groups of 10 to 15 people, while day visitors can attend for R30 for adults and R20 for children, with visitors required to exit at midnight.
