A HANOVER PARK mother says her son was left badly beaten and unable to walk after he was allegedly assaulted by Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) cops while on his way to a nearby shop.
The boy’s mom, Nerida Swartz, told the Daily Voice that the incident occurred on 5 February, after she sent her 18-year-old son, Uygun de Lily, to the bhai between 8pm and 9pm in Surwood Walk, Hanover Park.
The shop is a three-minute walk from their home, and he went along with a friend.
She says panic broke out when other kids from the court ran to her house shouting: “Aunty, daar vat die b***e vir Ugan.”
She said: “So his daddy, his sister, and I went around to go and ask what was happening, and most of those police officers were so rude.
“They pushed my husband away behind one of the vans and smacked him all over his face. They pushed us into one of the neighbours’ yards and they swore at us.
“Hulle het vir ons gesê, ons is a klomp n**iers en ons moet nie vir hulle vir ‘n p**s vat nie.”
She added several mense, including alleged skollies who were standing on the corner at the bhai, were taken into the yard by cops.
She said: “They hit my son, his friend, and the gansters.
“One of the gangsters told the cops that my son isn’t a gangster, but they told him hy moet sy bek hou, and they just kept on smacking my son.
“Eventually when Ugan was released, kon hy nie loop nie. We basically had to carry him to the court.”
The mom said that he had injuries to his face, bruised ribs, and blood stains on his clothes due to a bloody nose and family members had to carry him home after the cops left.
A spokesperson for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), Phaladi Shuping, confirmed that they are aware of the incident.
He said: “The case was reported over the weekend, and the case docket will be investigated by Ipid.”
This is the second complaint lodged by residents in Surwood Walk against AGU cops in less than a month.
The Daily Voice previously reported on an incident on 14 January where a mom claimed AGU cops trashed her huis and left her four-year-old daughter traumatised after storming their house.
A SAPS spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, confirmed that a case of malicious damage to property was registered following this incident.
Meanwhile, 11 AGU cops face charges of murder and torture, among other charges, following the death of alleged gang member Wade Price in December of last year.
