ATHLONE crime fighters are concerned about the bodies piling up in the area.

This, after police confirmed that another murder victim was found in the vicinity, following reports of two killings in gang-related violence.

The Daily Voice reported on Monday, 9 February, that two victims were shot on Friday night in separate incidents.

A police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, reported: “Athlone SAPS members were also alerted to a shooting incident at Springbok Street, Block 26, Kewtown in Athlone, in which an unidentified adult male was shot and fatally wounded.

“According to reports on Friday, 6 February at 8.30pm, SAPS members attended a shooting incident at the mentioned address, and on the members’ arrival, they were informed of a male who was lying in the road.”

Van Wyk also confirmed the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old male on the same street at Block 30.

Now, cops reveal that a 22-year-old man, who was stabbed to death, was discovered in a building on Aden Avenue on Friday morning.

According to Sergeant Wesley Twigg, the man was approached by unknown suspects who fatally wounded him before fleeing the scene.

Twigg said: “Athlone police registered a murder case for investigation following a stabbing incident on Friday morning, 6 February 2026, at about 8.30am in Aden Avenue, in which a 22-year-old male was fatally wounded.

“Police members attended to the crime scene, where they found the victim with stab wounds to his body. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel.

“According to reports, the victim was approached by unknown suspects who attacked him before fleeing the scene. The motive for the attack is yet to be established.”

It is alleged that skollies are engaged in what’s described as a turf war which, according to locals, have flared up into a bloody gang fight.

The Safety Co-ordinator for the Athlone Community Police Forum, Naweed Mohamed, said that they are concerned about the ongoing gun violence and fatalities in the area.

He said: “There is a great concern about the increase of fatalities, and we call on authorities to deploy the necessary resources to put a curb on the violence because, at the end of the day, it is the community that suffers.

“There seems to be a lot of shootings across the city, not just in Athlone.

“We are aware of the stabbing incident which took place on Friday. But I don’t know the circumstances surrounding the incident and cannot confirm if it is linked to any gang violence.”

The cops are appealing to mense with any information about the stabbing incident to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or by using the MySAPS app.
