KENSINGTON was rocked by an apparent gang hit on Monday afternoon when a man was gunned down inside a winkel in Fifth Avenue.
The deceased was believed to be standing at the shop when he was targeted in what police believe to be a gang-related shooting.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that a murder case is under investigation.
Van Wyk reported: “Kensington police registered a murder case following a shooting incident on Monday, 16 February, at 3.40 at a shop in 5th Avenue, Kensington, in which a 38-year-old male was shot and fatally wounded.
The deceased sustained several gunshot wounds to his body. The motive is believed to be gang-related. The investigations continue with no arrest as yet.”
Ward councillor Cheslyn Steenberg said that this is the first bloodshed in recent weeks.
He detailed: “Witness accounts said that the victim stood at the shop when he was gunned down by the perpetrators. The circumstances surrounding this incident are being investigated.
"It is unfortunate that we once again have to witness a murder in our community. Our area has been quiet for some time after intervention by the community working in conjunction with the SAPS.
“For the last three weeks, we have had no major incidents in the ward. We have had sporadic shootings, but no murder or attempted murder. This once again proves there are still guns and ammunition in our community.
“With the expected deployment of the South African National Defence Force, I hope that their hands will be stronger to confiscate more guns and ammunition from our communities.”
