A DJ from Kalksteenfontein was shot and killed while driving in Inkbloom Street on Saturday evening after unknown gunmen opened fire on the victim and other occupants in the car.
The victim was driving home when the gunmen started shooting causing him to lose control of his vehicle and crash into a wall.
The wife of the deceased, who refused to give the name of her husband, said he and their son were on their way home from the shop when the incident took place.
The bereaved vrou explains: “My husband was not a gangster, he was a DJ and the people who were driving with him were soccer players. None of them were gangsters. There was also a baby in the car.
"My husband and my son went to the shop and on their way home that is when the incident took place. I don’t understand why they would shoot him because he never did anything to anyone, he was an innocent victim.
"My husband was the only one who was hurt, the other passengers were not injured. The wall he crashed into was not our home because the incident did not take place on our road.”
Ward councilor Theresa Thompson said that she is saddened by the recent spate of gang violence happening in the community and doing what she can to address the gun violence.
Thompson adds: “In my capacity as both a ward councilor as well as a resident of ward 31 l am frustrated and saddened by the recent spate of shootings and escalation of gang activity in the area.
"I have been in constant contact with the relevant Law Enforcement agencies to step up patrols and try and increase visibility throughout the area. I am also speaking to the Community Policing Forum to see how we can approach the situation and work together with SAPS from a community standpoint.
"These shootings are affecting the daily lives of the community as a whole.
"Nobody is safe. Just leaving your home to go to work is dangerous, children cannot even play safely for fear of being caught in the crossfire. Almost daily somebody's son, husband, father, mother, sister or daughter is killed.”
