Two men have been arrested following the murder of a Lesotho national in Somerset West.
The incident, which occurred last week at a busy intersection of Main and Lourensford Roads, has left the community reeling.
However, swift police action led to the suspects' arrest in the nearby community of Grabouw.
Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk says cops acted on a tip-off and arrested three men a day after the incident.
“On Tuesday, 8 October 2024, police received information about the suspects involved in a murder case that led them to Grabouw. Three men were taken in for questioning for the murder case,” he says.
“During investigation, two suspects aged 31 and 34 were positively linked (to the shooting) and appeared briefly in the Somerset West Magistrate Court on Thursday. They remain in custody,” he says.
The suspects are set to appear again in court this Thursday, where police will oppose their bail application.
At the time of the shooting, local councillor Norman McFarlane expressed his shock saying the incident left him and the community in disbelief.
“If you look at where it happened, that is the entrance to the CBD, it’s a busy area, which is heavily populated with private residences and businesses,” he said.
Gunter Joachim from the Somerset West Neighbourhood Watch praised police for the arrests and thanked everyone involved in the process.
“The response companies that were involved in supplying information like registration numbers and footage to Saps, which led to speedy custody of the persons involved.”
