Police and drug experts have rubbished claims in a video being circulated on WhatsApp about a naked Elsies River woman being on flakka.
The one-minute clip shows the woman walking between traffic in Halt Road, her hands clasped in front of her breasts.
The video is taken from a vehicle and the voices of a man can be heard saying: “Die is wat flakka maak aan jou. Elsies, Halt Road die is wat flakka maak aan jou... Mense, asseblief, moet nie flakka gebruik nie.”
Flakka, also referred to as a zombie drug, is an hallucinogenic drug that causes panic and hysteria.
Now police have revealed that the 27-year-old woman in the video is actually a mental patient at a safe house in Elsies River.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, confirms the woman was reported missing on 17 September and says she was returned to the institution on Monday.
According to Ashley Potts, the Director of Cape Town Drug Counselling Centre, the woman does not exhibit any behaviour to indicate that she has used flakka and says due to the panic over the drug, Capetonians are incorrectly branding people with mental health issues.
“The people who made this video are irresponsible and what they have done is a violation of her human rights,” he adds.
Potts says the Hawks have investigated whether or not flakka is in Cape Town and have found no evidence to support the claims.
