Craig Lucas is dik proud of himself after his hit song Smother reached gold status.
On Sunday, before performing Purple Rain live with the top six on The Voice SA Season 3, producers of the show revealed the news to Craig in the Red Room.
The ecstatic singer, 26, says he was just about to take the stage when they surprised him with the kwaai news.
“I was really stoked by the news and I am grateful for the support of all my fans who made this possible. Without you buying my music, I would never have reached gold. I’m amped to see what my new music will do," he tells the Daily Voice.
Reaching gold status in the South African music is when an artist selling 10 000 units.
Craig won The Voice SA Season 2 in 2017 and his final performance was Prince’s Purple Rain, which blew everyone away.
Craig released Smother in 2017 as a solo act, and then again in 2018 when he did a duet with Idols winner Paxton Fielies.
The Elsies River singer took to social media shortly after the news of his latest achievement, tweeting: “Smother” went gold! I’m so thankful to all of you for loving and supporting my music. Shoutout to the incredible Jethro Tait who I wrote the song with and Paxton Fielies for lending her beautiful vocals to the remix.”

Craig, who released his latest single Anti-Sociable last Friday, tells says: “This is a big achievement for me as a singer and a songwriter and I’m incredibly proud of it. The song doesn’t only belong to me but to everyone who relates to it when they listen to it.”
His mother Jennifer Lucas, 54, was with Craig in Johannesburg and was delighted by the news.
“I’m so proud of my baby, I want to thank everyone who supported him. On Sunday Craig was sick with bronchitis and struggled on stage with the top six but he gave his all,” she says.

Paxton says her friend deserves it: “I’m so happy for Craig’s song reaching gold and also honoured to have played a part in this song.
“He worked very hard on his music and now he reaps the rewards.”
