DELIGHT: Baruch Entertainers celebrate winning Klopse Jol and the Combine categories DELIGHT: Baruch Entertainers celebrate winning Klopse Jol and the Combine categories
The District Six Entertainers were crowned the carnival kings of 2018 on Saturday in a fitting end to the season.
The Kaapse Klopse Karnival Assosiasie’s Champ of Champs event at Cape Town Stadium was well attended.
The D6 minstrels walked away with the all-important bragging rights as well as the prestigious seven-foot trophy after winning the carnival by just one point.
Yes, mense, that is how tight the competition was on Saturday.
The Bo-Kaap team remained silent throughout the competition with strict instructions from D6 director Shahied “Hiedie Boy” Simons.
Team members were asked not to comment on any social media platforms, to remain humble and to compete to the best of their ability.
The team rocked up at the stadium with a smaller singpak than usual as many members had returned to work and could no longer participate.
REWARDED: Karen Kortje of D6 came second
Mr. Simons remained confident in his team and told them before they went on: “ Julle gaan compete en julle is die hart vannie singpak, die-hard D6 members, so go out and make us proud.”
The day started off with Mundhir Challa Mckriel and Impronto who blazed into the Cape Town Stadium with a gevaarlike Klopse Jol.
They brought the house down, and walked away with the third prize, which was the first step towards moving D6 closer to the carnival kings title.
The second item for the day was the FemaleSentimental and District Six was lucky enough to have former Idols winner Karen Kortje as part of their team.
Karen blew the judges away and was rewarded with a second prize for her performance.
Following these two items, the Juvie Boys troupe was in the lead, thanks to Elvira Standili’s first prize Female Solo with her own rendition of You’re Gonna Love Me.
The Baruch Entertainers’ Klopse Jol was nothing less than brilliant, earning them a first place, followed by Juvie Boys.
Then it was time for the singpakke to take the stage and every single team came out volbors and delivered world-class combines.
The judges decided that the combine kings for the season is Baruch Entertainers, who once again crushed with the song Jerusalem, much to the delight of the crowd who gave them a roaring standing ovation.
District 6 was rewarded with a well-deserved second place.
CHAMPS: D6 Entertainers celebrate with trophie s
The moppies of all the teams were amazing and at times even mesmerizing.
Every single troupe came to the party and nobody on the stand could call the winner.
Juvie Boys delighted with an English Comic which was filled with humour, and voorsinger, Ghakeem Roman, is a comical genius in his own right.
The Elite All Stars came out and gave a highly entertaining performance of Thabo the Zulu with the centre part of the moppie rukking the stadium to the tune of Banana Follow You. Voorsinger Tashrique de Villiers was on point with his high energy and vocally brilliance. All the top teams brought it with their moppies and this was an amazing thing to see.
The KKKA should get much praise for letting this be the final item as the Moppie Song is the most indigenous and always upbeat.
The first prize moppie went to the District Six Entertainers for the song, Die Waterkrisis.
The item was worth a massive nine points and this was enough to push D6 ahead of the runners-up, the Juvie Boys, to win by a single point.
ON SONG: Ghakeem Roman of Juvie Boys amazed and mesmerised with liedjie
D6 supporters went bos on social media and who can blame them? The competition was tough, but they came out tops. Well done!
With that said, this has without a doubt been one of the best klopse seasons to date.
The KKKA deserves much praise and I believe that, in time, they will take this carnival to the next level.
The attendance was great and with a positive mindset from all involved, inclu- ding the supporters and Facebook judges.
Filling up Cape Town Stadium to capacity should become our goal. It will signal we want to uplift our culture and gain more media coverage.
I hope by next year the SABC, e.tv and Kyknet will broadcast the carnival live.
Now it’s time to say goodbye to the klopse, but we welcome in our Malay choirs.
The Cape Malay Choirs competition kicks off on Saturday, 3 March at 8pm at Bellville Velodrome. See you there!
