Ouma Nora de Kock celebrated her 111th birthday in style with a few of her close friends on Wednesday.
Born on 12 May 1910 in Paarl, Ouma Nora is hups and can still walk, see and hear relatively well.
The golden oldie could possibly be the oldest woman alive in the Western Cape and was close friends with Oom Fredie Blom from Delft, who died last August at the age of 116.
For four years in a row, her neighbour and good friends Carol and Stanley van Wyk have been throwing Ouma a lekker party to celebrate her milestone birthdays.
Wednesday was no different as the party crew held a jol at the Van Riebeeck Hall in Kuils River.
Ouma Nora brags when she says she is in good health and does not depend on any meds to keep her gesond.
“Ek het nie kwale nie. I’m still able to take care of myself, it’s just the hearing and my walking that is getting slower, but I'm still a spring chicken.
“I survived the pandemic without getting the Covid-19 virus - not by taking meds, but just staying inside my house all the time.”
Carol and Stanley, who also run a community soup kitchen, organised the treat for Ouma Nora and 15 other seniors.
“We made a lekker breakfast of bacon, savoury eggs, viennas, chicken livers and toast with juice and water,” said Carol.
“We love to honour our elderly. Ouma Nora is a blessing to us and we are honoured to be able to do this for her.”
Shoprite Kuils River gave Ouma Nora a large vanilla cake and staff sang Happy Birthday to her at the store.
Her guests were also given care packs filled with toiletries.
Ouma Nora, who was never married, has two children, three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Uigevat in her favourite white blazer and grey skirt with her famous white doekie, she said: “Thank you to everyone who came to make my birthday special, thank you to Stan and Carol, julle het my dag gemaak, ek is dankbaar.”
