There are those among you who may remember that classic early ‘80s fliek Cannonball Run, where the competitors race against the clock for sea to shining sea in the US of A.
Well, it is a for-real challenge and also America’s most illegal record, and it has just been beaten seven times in just five weeks. That’s right, wide open roads have cleared the way for endurance speedsters to whip across the continent on the 4546km journey, one team doing it in under 26 hours, at an average speed of 172km/h . Before Corona, a sub 28-hour record was unthinkable.
The new and as-yet unnamed record holders completed the run in an Audi A8 with large marine fuel tanks strapped into the boot.
This is according to a chap named Ed Bolian, who once held the record with 28 hours and 50 minutes, and is now the defacto adjudicator of the highly illegal run, which though it has no governing body, is infamous in car culture.
To set a Cannonball Run record, you must traditionally start at the Red Ball Garage in Manhattan, then traverse the entire United States of America as fast as possible to finish at the Portofini Inn in Redondo Beach, California. Simple as that.
Get your spotters placed across country, do some serious prep and floor it, basically.
