Benni's in the 021 area!
Boy oh boy does John Comitis know how to make headlines.
Benni McCarthy is the new coach of Cape Town City and what a story that is.
Legend McCarthy returns to his home city for his first head coaching job.
A lot of people out there will be questioning the move, with experienced coaches like Muhsin Ertugral – who would have been the coach only for Pirates to come knocking after Comitis bought Black Aces’ status last year – and also Ruud Krol.
Krol was spotted in Cape Town according to the spies, but Cape Town City tweeted on Monday that the new coach would arrive in the city on Tuesday for the announcement.
They also kind of gave the game away when they replied to Mark Mayambela’s tweet about Benni being the new coach and wishing him all the best when they said “come join him”.
It’s a massive risk on the side of Comitis but how many times have I said on these very pages, that man knows football.
He wouldn’t just bring in McCarthy to sell more caps.
Benni has been ready to take the hot seat for some time and I know he would have taken the Pirates job until the riot at Loftus.
After that he told me straight no chance he’s getting involved.
That would have been too big a test I feel, as the club needed resurrecting.
And with such a difficult support base and too much scrutiny, I think he was right not to make that his first coaching gig.
But this one, this job at Cape Town City, now that’s a nice carrot for him.
Firstly, it’s Cape Town so he gets to be home – just watch the partying and Golden Dish gazi although if you do get that gatsby send some to Jozi please!
Secondly, there’s talent at Cape Town City, this is a team that finished third in the PSL coming from literally nowhere.
They will have a tougher sophomore year for sure but at least there’s no funny business behind the scenes.
And thirdly, Benni will have the respect of the players from the get-go.
He will bring an excitement because they know what he’s done, they all already look up to him.
He even played in the same team as some and others such as Shuaib Walters would have faced him.
They all know what he is capable of and that among footballers will earn him immediate respect and they’ll do what he says.
Benni has his Uefa license, he’s got coaching experience in Scotland and no one knows SA football as it is today like him.
It’s the perfect match and I wish him and the club all the best.
