Guys at the South Africa Football Association (Safa), you decided to reduce Mpho Makola’s suspension from six months to four matches, neh?
So what you going to do now that Wits players did the very same thing?
Why would any player think it’s okay to touch a referee?
To even go as far as to even push and shove a referee, when they wouldn’t dare push or shove another player?
Look, I totally get it in amateur football, because it is that right, amateur football which means amateur decisions.
But to see professional pushing and shoving a referee is absolute disgrace.
Last year, Makola of Cape Town City was in trouble for pushing a referee during an official match.
Shockingly he was only given a yellow card but that was followed up by the PSL Disciplinary Committee slapping him with a six-month ban.
SPARED: City's Mpho Makola
All hell broke loose and City challenged the decision and it was cut to just four matches and the man is back in time to help the Citizens fight their up the league table.
Jiki-jiki this past weekend, there was another incident of players pushing a referee, this time around it was Wits players in a match against City, funnily enough.
About six players surrounded the referee after he had made a call to give a penalty against Wits.
Two of the players pushed, while the others shouted what even looked like vulgar language.
Surely there’s going to be punishment for the six players involved. I’m not even suggesting they should get the same punishment, but they all deserve to be punished.
Keep in mind that in both instances, the referee didn’t send any players off.
Makola was yellow carded and of the Wits players, only the goalkeeper Ricardo Goss got cautioned.
BOOKED: Ricardo Goss of Wits
The problem here is that by overturning the decision on Makola’s suspension, it is thus expected that these players will be suspended for four matches as well.
But I think Safa should come down hard on the Wits players. It doesn’t matter how it affects their campaign.
Perhaps that is more reason to punish them and make an example of them.
The Clever Boys are one of the real challengers to current leaders Kaizer Chiefs for the PSL title.
Suspending some of their players might hurt their
chances of catching up with Amakhosi.
Safa must do it, they must punish them exactly for that, to destabilise their league title fight.
Let it be an example of how badly your players’ worst behaviour could hurt a club.
No referee deserves that kind of treatment, fans should not be exposed to that kind of stuff.
We watch football for entertainment, if we wanted to watch people beating each other up we would watch wrestling or boxing.
Kids, don’t do this. Just because professional players do it, it doesn’t mean it’s okay.
