Stellenbosch lost their nerve in a penalty shootout as they crashed out of the Nedbank Cup against Maritzburg United on Friday evening, losing 5-4 after the game ended 2-2.
In an all-action first half, the Athlone Stadium hosts twice took the lead through Mpho Matsi and Lelethu Skelem.
But United were level when the break came thanks to a double from Thabiso Kutumela and the sides couldn’t be separated until a scattergun shootout.
Stellies boss Steve Barker rued a chance to put the game beyond the visitors from KZN in the first half, saying: “We had a chance to go 3-1 ahead through Ryan Moon at the top of the formation and the game is ours to lose.”
