BEST IN THE LAND: City chasing a treble

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says winning this season’s Premier League title was the “hardest one” yet.

City were confirmed the best team in England without kicking a ball on Tuesday night when third-placed Leicester beat second-placed Manchester United 2-1 win, handing the Cityzens their fifth title in 10 years.

With an unassailable 10-point lead and three games to spare in this Covid-19 pandemic-hit season, coach Guardiola celebrated his third title with City in five seasons and hailed this success as his toughest.

He says: “This has been a season and a Premier League title like no other. This was the hardest one.”

City will have to wait until May 23 to celebrate with their fans and the Catalan says he can’t wait, adding: “I am looking forward to the Everton game.

“We will lift the trophy and 10 000 are coming.

“This business without the people is not the same.”

With the title finally sewn up and the League Cup to boot, City now turn their attention to the Champions League final against Chelsea on May 29, with the showdown now reportedly set to be played at Porto’s Estadio do Dragao in Portugal.

And City captain Fernandinho vowed to bring the club’s Holy Grail “home” after hailing his teammates, in a season in which they went on an English-record winning run of 21 victories in a row in all competitions.

The veteran Brazilian midfielder says: “To win it again means the world to me and the rest of the squad.

“Rest assured we will continue to do everything we can to bring the Champions League home this season.”
