TOUGH: Schmeichel’s Leicester
Leicester will be tough to beat this season after becoming the first team outside of the “big six” to win the Community Shield, warns goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
The Foxes beat Premier League champions Manchester City 1-0 in Saturday’s Community Shield at Wembley to follow up on their first-ever FA Cup success in May – beating Chelsea by the same score at the same venue.
Former City striker Kelechi Iheanacho’s 89th-minute penalty proved the difference against Pep Guardiola’s big spenders, who unleashed Jack Grealish after his British record £100m move from Aston Villa.
And Schmeichel, who helped the Foxes to a stunning underdog league title triumph in 2015-16, believes that they can krap the skaapies deurmekaar against the big dogs again this coming season.
The great Dane says: “We’re very happy. We’ll never get tired of lifting trophies. It’s something we want to do.
“I have great memories here and it’s great to lift the trophy, you could see what it means to the players and fans.
“We’re not going out to prove ourselves [against the big six], because we know what a good team we can be. We are a struggle for any team. We go into these games and we relish them.
With back-to-back trophies for the Foxes now, Schmeichel adds: “We’re getting used to these types of games, we’re winning these types of games, and there’s a lot of good play in these games.
“We’ve shown throughout [the past few years] that anything is possible.”
