KEEN TO ATTACK: Paul de Wet

Western Province will continue to back their attack when they face the Bulls in their Currie Cup clash at Loftus Versfeld tomorrow night.

That’s the word from scrumhalf Paul de Wet, who won the Man of the Match award in their 35-24 demolition of the Sharks last weekend to scrape into the last four.

While they have been leaky in defence, conceding 49 tries in 12 round-robin outings, Province have also scored their fair share of tries with a total of 46.

Last weekend they had to score five of them to make the final four. And they did so against a strong Sharks team in Durban.

Does that mean WP will go out all guns blazing again at Loftus in an effort to shoot down the much-fancied Bulls?

De Wet answers: “We knew what the challenge was [last week], we had to score five tries and we actually played some lekker rugby.

“That’s the plan going to Loftus, not to change too much.

“It’s a big game and we’ve got to stick to the plan and do everything we can to get that win.”

While the global tendency is for scrumhalves to kick the ball a lot and set off their runners to compete aerially, De Wet is in a different mould.

Preferring a running game, he is not interested in getting involved in a kicking contest with the Bulls on the Highveld tomorrow night.

PLAYING WITH FREEDOM: Western Province celebrate

Of his approach to the game, De Wet adds: “[Attack coach] Dawie [Snyman] is coaching us to lift the tempo and just to create play the whole time. That suits me well.

“We’ve been working very hard on the attack and the stuff in training is coming off, so that is quite rewarding.”

He adds: “I definitely prefer the running game, our attacking shape at the moment suits me nicely.”

Province will announce their side for the big clash today.
