OLE Gunnar Solskjaer has emerged as the odds-on favourite to return as Manchester United manager following the sudden sacking of Ruben Amorim. The Norwegian’s potential comeback has sparked intrigue, nostalgia, and debate among fans and pundits alike.

Solskjaer’s return would be an emotional one for a man who spent 11 years at Old Trafford as a player and a further three as manager.

Whether appointed on an interim or permanent basis, he would arrive with unfinished business. Under his previous tenure, United finished third in the Covid-19-affected 2019/20 season and second in 2020/21.

There was much hope the following season, particularly after signing Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho, and Cristiano Ronaldo, that United could challenge champions Manchester City.

However, inconsistent results led to his sacking midway through the campaign.

According to reports in the UK, Solskjaer faces competition from another former Red Devil Michael Carrick.

The UK’s Mirror reported: “United's chief executive, Omar Berrada, and director of football, Jason Wilcox, spoke to both contenders on Tuesday.

“They will now meet with each of them again before deciding which of the pair will return to Old Trafford.”

Carrick also took charge of United in an interim capacity in 2021.
