Of his effort, De Villiers wysed: “It was  a lot of fun. The first thing that came to mind – I was probably not going to play because I’ve got a bit of a hamstring strain – and I told my children to stay at home today because it’s a long bus ride.

“So I think my kids are not going to be happy with me… I’m really sorry.

“They are here to watch me live and I made that decision and I told them we’re already in the semis, so stay at home.”

He added of batting with the injury: “I just decided to be aggressive and not to run too much... ”

His knock helped SA beat their old foes by 95 runs.

Of winning the tournament, De Villiers said before the match: “We’ve got to take it one game at a time and do everything possible to win the tournament.”

Topping the six-team standings with eight points from five matches, the South Africans have already secured a spot in the semi-finals on Thursday, with their opponent still to be decided.

De Villiers will enter the playoffs high on confidence after also scoring a geharde unbeaten 116 against England and 61 not out versus India. He is the tournament’s top run-scorer with 305 runs at an average of 152.50.

Australia and Pakistan have also qualified for the semi-finals, while India need a massive win over the West Indies Champions in their final game today to advance.
