PROTEA opener Dewald Brevis finally arrived on the biggest stage of them all on Tuesday, klapping Australia’s bowlers to all corners of the Marrara Oval for his maiden international century.
Brevis, 22, was at his bullying best – smashing an unbeaten 125 off just 56 balls in an innings that included eight sixes and 12 fours – to help the Proteas post an incredible 218/7 in their 20 overs, before limiting their hosts to just 165 all out to win the match by 53 runs.
The win means the three-match T20 series is now level at 1-1, with the “final” played on Saturday.
But Baby AB, as Brevis is known, will be the talk of the town after scoring his hundred off 41 balls – the second fastest by a South African in T20 internationals and highest individual score for the Proteas in T20s. David Miller scored the fastest ton – off just 35 balls against Bangladesh in 2017.
However, Brevis scored just 14 runs off his first 12 balls and then he trekked los.
Brevis said of the knock and the win: “Extremely grateful, owe it all to God. Great to be out here on the winning side, to celebrate that was the ultimate of the day... To be able to come back stronger after the first game, that’s fantastic. Everyone played their part... ”
Defending their biggest T20 score against Australia, SA’s bowlers had a job to do.
And Corbin Bosch (3/20) and Kwena Maphaka (3/57) answered the call to demolish the Aussies in Darwin.
With Brevis and Maphaka both starring in this match, the future looks rosy for SA’s cricketers.
Now for Saturday’s finale…
