BUILDING UP: Kagiso Rabada

THE Proteas’ final tune-up before the T20 World Cup sees them face India in a warm-up clash at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Wednesday (3.30pm start).
With their tournament opener against Canada looming next Monday, the Proteas will use the contest as a last chance to sharpen key combinations and settle lingering questions.
One of the biggest focuses will be Kagiso Rabada. The spearhead has been working his way back after a rib injury sustained ahead of last year’s India tour, which sidelined him for months.
While his numbers in the SA20 – nine wickets in eight matches at over nine runs per over – were below his gevaarlike standards, there were encouraging signs during the recent West Indies series.
At Centurion, on a flat pitch where most bowlers sukkeled, Rabada’s 2/35 hinted at a return to rhythm.
With South Africa relying heavily on him to lead the bowling attack, a confidence-boosting outing against India could be perfectly.
Batting balance is another area under the microscope.
Ryan Rickelton has emerged as a groot candidate at No 3. Since occupying that position against the West Indies, the left-hander has shown the temperament and skill required, qualities that become even more valuable in knockout matches.
There is also cautious optimism around David Miller. After picking up a groin niggle late in the SA20 season, he passed an initial fitness test before departure.
With nearly 16 years of international experience and a reputation for delivering on the biggest stages, Miller’s presence – and some valuable time in the middle – could be crucial as the Proteas chase an elusive first World Cup title.
