THE Western Province aeroplane is ready for take off in this year’s Currie Cup Premier Division.
So says Province assistant coach, Dewaldt Duvenage, ahead of the Kaapse span’s crunch fourth Currie Cup game against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday.
WP find themselves stuck at the bottom of the Currie Cup standings with three losses and zero points.
All three of their defeats to the Bulls, Lions and Griquas have been by margins of 20 points or more.
And Kaapse fans are erg kwaad of seeing their span sukkel in a competition they are known to dominate.
But with WP’s new strategy of blooding rookies and giving club talent a chance, het dinge lelik skeef geloop this season.
However, former WP and Stormers scrumhalf, Duvenage, says they are not ready to throw in the towel after a disappointing start to the season, just yet.
And according to Dewies, WP are one big game away from challenging for this year’s Currie Cup title.
Duvenage wysed: “The main challenge was to get everyone on the same page... our [other] challenge, at the moment, is putting together an 80-minute performance.
“At the end of the day, it is about stringing minutes together and getting the guys to gel. We are not far off, although the scores against us are telling a different story.
“Getting on the same page has been a bit of a slog, but it is now time for us to get the plane off the runway in that department. And hopefully that happens this weekend.”
Duvenage reckons other shock Round 3 results – like the Pumas and Boland Cavaliers klapping the Bulls and Lions, respectively – have left the door open for WP to get back into the Currie Cup fight.
He explained: “If we can get a few points, that could get the ball rolling.”
