MANCHESTER City captain Bernardo Silva said his span had paid the price for being unable to deal with Al Hilal’s counter-attacking as they crashed out of the Club World Cup with a shock 4-3 loss in extra time in the biggest upset of the tournament so far.
The match finished 2-2 at full-time, but at the end of an eventful extra-time Marcos Leonardo grabbed the winner and pulled off one of the greatest wins in Middle Eastern football history.
The Saudi club advance to the quarter-finals where they will face Brazilian club Fluminense who beat Inter Milan 2-0 earlier in the day, ensuring a non-European team will reach the last four.
Silva turned home from close range to put City ahead after nine minutes on a muggy night on the east coast, but Leonardo levelled early in the second half.
Former Barcelona winger Malcom fired the Saudi side ahead after Joao Cancelo threaded him through on goal.
Erling Haaland levelled for City and had an effort cleared off the line late on before the game went to extra-time.
Koulibaly nodded home from a corner after 94 minutes, but Phil Foden finished well to level 10 minutes later.
The match was decided by Leonardo reacting well to prod home when Ederson saved Sergej Milinkovic-Savic’s header after 112 minutes, with City unable to battle back a third time.
Silva said: “We scored three and could’ve scored five, six. It was all about controlling when we lost the ball, controlling the transitions, don't let them run, and they ran way too many times.
“With one, two passes there was always a feeling of danger coming from them. When we allow teams to run like this we always suffer a lot, and today was the case.”
City baas Pep Guardiola gave credit to Al Hilal, but clearly hadn’t seen such an outcome on the horizon.
Guardiola said: “It is a pity, we have been on an incredible journey together and so good place. The vibe was really good, I cannot thank Manchester City enough and especially the players for training and how they have been playing.”
