CAPE Town soccer star Fawaaz Basadien has left Stellenbosch FC and is now officially a Brazilian, after completing a move to Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday.

The 28-year-old Bafana Bafana leftback, who has starred down the flank for Stellies after joining them from Moroka Swallows in 2022, says he can’t wait to play for, and win trophies at, Masandwana.

Basadien said in a brief video on Sundowns’ social-media platforms: “Masandawana family, I’m happy to be here and I can’t wait for you guys to fill up the stadiums and watch us win more trophies. I’m proud to be yellow.”

The Brazilians beat competition from rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, who reportedly also wanted Basadien.

Sundowns announced the Bafana international’s arrival with a social-media post saying: “Basadien joins the home of champions.”

A club statement read: “The Yellow Nation is proud to welcome Bafana Bafana international defender, Fawaaz Basadien. New season, new signings. It’s time to get ready for a new season! Introducing our newest signing – the versatile and talented Fawaaz Basadien. Welcome to the Yellow Nation, Fawaaz.”

Basadien aces his primary duties – defending – to the tee, and has evolved in moving high up as he joins in on build-ups.

Basadien made 111 appearances across all competitions for Stellies, scoring eight goals and providing 18 assists.

He also won the club’s Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season awards last season.

Stellies wysed: “Everyone at the club extends their sincere gratitude to Fawaaz for his professionalism, leadership, and commitment during his time in the maroon jersey. He departs with our appreciation and best wishes as he embarks on the next chapter of his career.”
