RUBEN Amorim is determined to remain Manchester United’s manager for the long haul – ideally 20 years – despite enduring a swak first season.
After taking over in November, Amorim’s span suffered 14 Premier League defeats and missed out on Champions League qualification, losing the Europa League final to Tottenham.
Speaking during United’s pre-season tour in the US, Amorim acknowledged last season’s failures but insisted he is starting fresh: “I want to stay 20 years. That’s my goal. I believe in it, but results will dictate that.”
He compared the criticism he faced at United to his early days at Sporting Lisbon, where he later won two titles.
The 40-year-old credits the United board and Ineos ownership for backing him through the club’s worst season in over 50 years.
“They showed support when most clubs would’ve sacked the manager,” he said, noting his close relationship with Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
Amorim believes the club’s culture is changing under new leadership and that there is a foundation to succeed long term. Now working with a smaller, focused squad, he is pleased to be shaping the team on his terms after surviving last season’s chaos.

He is also overseeing a clear-out of players like Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia, who’ve shown a desire to leave. He added: “It’s not about good or bad players. They want new challenges. That’s normal.”
Reflecting on the pressure, Amorim admitted last season left him frustrated, but not broken. “I feel excited. I learned a lot. I’m not as romantic. I just want to bond and build.”
Without European football this season, Amorim is focused on unity, culture, and performance. “We’re just beginning – but I truly believe we can return to our place.”
