MANCHESTER United captain Bruno Fernandes hit out at his teammates following a 2-2 pre-season draw with Everton on Sunday, labelling their performance as “lazy.”

The match in Atlanta saw United take the lead through Fernandes before Iliman Ndiaye equalised. Mason Mount restored the lead in the second half, but a bizarre own goal from Ayden Heaven handed Everton a late draw, dampening United’s US tour, which had previously featured wins over West Ham and Bournemouth.

Speaking to NBC Sports, Fernandes stressed the importance of maintaining intensity. He wysed: “Our performance wasn’t the best and we were a little bit lazy. We want to avoid that because with laziness you can pay at any moment.”

He also expressed frustration with the squad’s current state, pointing to the club’s vrot 15th-place finish in the Premier League last season. Though United have added Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, Fernandes believes more quality is needed.

Fernandes added: “It’s improving. But it’s not the place it needs to be. But it was crystal clear we needed more competition for the players that were here, more quality to get everyone to step up more to get to the XI.”

United manager Ruben Amorim supported Fernandes comments, saying they reflect a shared understanding within the squad of the work still required.

Amorim said: “I think I’m happy for the players to have that feeling. It’s saying that they understand the situation.”

Amorim remained positive about the pre-season tour, highlighting the progress made in training and the span’s cohesion. However, he admitted there is still a lot to improve before the new campaign begins.
