SIPHO “Master Chef” Mbule scored a stunning long-range goal as Bafana Bafana beat Ghana 1-0 in their final match before the start of the Africa Cup of Nations this weekend.
South Africa played against the Black Galaxies – effectively Ghana’s second-stringers because their overseas stars did not participate in the Dobsonville friendly.
Ghana’s top guns, the Black Stars, failed to qualify for Afcon and therefore had no need to send their best span to SA.
It showed on the day, with the match turning out to be a rather scrappy affair, as Bafana coach Hugo Broos will just be happy that his manne escaped any serious injuries in the clash – something that had former SA goalkeeper Ithumeleng Khune worried while commentating on the game.
Despite Ghana’s tough tackles, SA pushed hard after the break following the introduction of a number of stars – especially that of Oswin Appollis down the right flank.
It was the Master Chef, though, who provided the moment of the match when he thundered home a shot from way out to beat Ghana’s goalkeeper after the players had taken oranges. Such was the nature of the game that his strike was SA’s first on target in the match.
The attacking midfielder himself was responsible for wasted chances in the first half, having had two lekker opportunities to break the duck – one with a header from a corner in the 12th minute and the other was a shot 10 minutes later that was completely off the radar.
The result, though, was never important for SA as they gear up to play Angola in their Afcon opener on Monday.
