DESPITE klapping the Premier League’s two biggest managers Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta in back-to-back matches, Manchester United legend Roy Keane says interim coach Michael Carrick is not big enough for the top job.
Carrick has been hired until the end of the season following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal on 5 January.
But the United hierarchy might have stumbled across the solution with their move for Carrick. United are up to fourth in the league and Carrick praised the manne for responding to his tactical demands.
After beating Arsenal 3-2 at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday – a result that followed their 2-0 win over Manchester City in Carrick’s first match in charge – suggestions were made that Carrick could be the missing link.
Match hero Matheus Cunha, who scored a winner against the Gunners, seems to think so, saying: “He [Carrick] knows the feeling, he played here so many years. He knows the feeling for Manchester, he knows the feeling for United. He knows how the fans want to feel.
“He tried to show us every single moment, he tried to talk us to understand in moments and say ‘everyone is against us’, so I think we feel more together.”
But Keane is not convinced, saying on Sky Sports when asked if Carrick should be the permanent baas: “No, you’re being silly now.
“He’s had two great performances, but anybody can win two games.
“It’s what he does until the end of the season and even if they do get into fourth I still wouldn’t be convinced he’s the man for the job, absolutely not.
“They need a bigger and better manager, but he’s got the opportunity.”
