BAFANA Bafana are in pole position in Group C of the Caf World Cup Qualifiers after klapping Lesotho 2-0 in Polokwane on Friday.
Relebohile Mofokeng, 20, scored the first goal for Bafana after he was set up by Elias Mokwana in the 60th minute, before Jayden Adams made it 2-0 on the rebound three minutes later.
While he was happy with the three points, coach Hugo Broos is also satisfied with the return to the starting XI of Percy Tau.
The 30-year-old was widely regarded as South Africa’s in recent years, but after not playing much at his former club Al Ahly, he last started for Bafana in June last year.
After playing against Lesotho, Broos says of Tau: “I said before that we couldn’t be happy with Percy’s performances in previous games -that was not the level of Percy. But [against Lesotho] you could see he played a fantastic game and worked a lot. That’s because he’s playing regularly again.
“When you don’t play games, you don’t have the rhythm, and you can’t perform at your best. I am sure that, with time, we will see Percy back at his highest level because he is playing in Qatar.
“It can always be better, and we can expect more, but I am very happy with his performance. He worked a lot for the team, and that’s something we have to take into account.”
Tau will be looking to impress his boss again when they tackle second-placed Benin in the Ivory Coast on Tuesday (6pm kickoff).
