Pep Guardiola says an elusive Champions League title isn’t his only target this season, declaring that Manchester City “chase a lot of competitions”.
City go into tonight’s last-16 clash first leg against Borussia Monchengladbach at Budapest’s Puskas Arena in Hungary (10pm) looking for a 19th straight win.
With a 10-point lead at the top of the Premier League, a League Cup final in April and a last-eight place in the FA Cup, City are also well-placed to win a first-ever European title.
Asked whether the Champions League is their holy grail, Guardiola says: “Right now today, no. We chase a lot of competitions. We’re going to try to win [against Gladbach]. That’s all. We’re going to prepare the game as we have the last months and that’s all.”
Form man Ilkay Gundogan is back in line to start after playing off the bench in Saturday’s 1-0 Prem win over Arsenal with a groin strain. And he says past Champions League failures aren’t haunting City after they were knocked out by unfancied Lyon last season.
The German says: “It is not something forgotten but it doesn’t give me any extra motivation and it is a new chance and a new challenge.
“We just try to do our best as we did in the past. I wouldn't say we did less in the past, we just made mistakes.
“The motivation is there as it was last year and the year before so we just try to do our best.”
