Kung Fu master Muhammad Junaid Chafeker, aka MJ Li, will be launching the much-anticipated part two of his book Kung Fu – The Untold History later this month.
The five-time Legends of Kung Fu World Martial Arts Championship gold medallist is officially unveiling the book in his hometown Rocklands, Mitchells Plain, and says: “Part two is dedicated to my beloved father, Shaik Abdullah Chafeker, who passed away in February 2020.
“This book comes off the back of the highly successful launch of part one in October 2019, which saw over 5 000 copies sold in five months.”
Junaid, 36, says his childhood community was where his love for Kung Fu started.
His first book Kung Fu, My Journey, My History, was dedicated to his mother Salma, 60, who passed away two years ago.
The grandmaster of Kung Fu says the launch is just in time for Ramadaan which is starting this week.
“Part two expansively looks at the in-depth arrival of Islam in China dating back to the Tang Dynasty period that saw two diplomatic missions to China by Muslim emissaries,” he explains.
“It also provides a comprehensive discussion on the Great Chinese Muslim Hui Grandmasters of Kung Fu; much of which was only briefly mentioned in part one.”
Chafeker, who lives in Goodwood, also explores holistic well-being through the ancient Chinese arts of Tai Chi and Qi Gong – a combination of slow, deliberate movements, meditation, breathing exercises, and Chinese medicine, and how relevant these healing arts are in the current Covid-19 pandemic.
“After I was introduced to Chinese acupuncture and medicine in 2009, I have been practising Chinese medicine and therapy over the last few years,” he says.
“And during the month of Ramadaan, I will be administering Chinese wet and dry cupping plus Chinese acupuncture in the evening after iftar and taraweegh in Goodwood or anywhere in Cape Town by appointment.
“The optimal flow of Qi and blood this Ramadaan could be achieved through acupuncture and Chinese cupping.
“This ultimately could go a long way towards strengthening our worship during the holy month and assist in the change of season.”
