A Delft man is using woodwork to carve a brighter future for laaities in his community.
Phoenix neighbourhood watch member Khayalethu Mbethe is known for his kwaai woodwork skills and building beautiful wooden boats.
The ex-convict says his criminal record has always hindered him from getting a job.
But being in jail has now turned out to be a positive experience because that is where he learned woodwork.
“I was in Goodwood (correctional facility) for shoplifting, I spent three months in there, but I learnt the skill,” he says.
“And when I came out, I decided to continue building the boats and then some children in the neighbourhood became interested in learning and I was happy to teach them.”
He explains that the children have become discouraged because he doesn’t have space for them to work.
“I live in a shack and it is too small for hosting people and also keeping my equipment in,” says the 58-year-old.
“I would like to help the youth to stay away from drugs and gangsterism by giving them this skill.”
He says in order to make his masterpieces, he collects off-cuts from builders.
“I even go to people who are building hokkies and just ask for wood and then start carving, then use sandpaper and glue.
“After putting the pieces together, I go out and try to sell them but because I live in Delft and many people can hardly put food on the table, there isn’t much business.
“I have tried to sell in town but I was told that I need a permit, and I end up selling my art for less that it’s worth.”
Khayalethu joined the Phoenix neighbourhood watch two weeks ago when they registered.
Vice-chairperson Nicole Joseph says: “He came to us and introduced himself and then told us that he is not working and would love to join us, and we gladly welcomed him.
“Then he told us about his passion and that he had started teaching kids the craft.
“We have encouraged him to continue teaching the children and when we find space, that will be another way to get kids off the streets.”
