Controversial businessman Nafiz Modack is set to stand trial for the attempted murder of top criminal lawyer William Booth.
Modack made his first appearance at the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court this morning where he faces a string of charges including attempted murder, extortion, intimidation and kidnapping.
Heavily armed police surrounded the court building as Modack and co-accused Jacques Cronje and Ricardo Morgan made their first appearance after being nabbed by the Hawks last week.
Among those present were Police Minister Bheki Cele, Western Cape provincial police commissioner Major-General Thembisile Patekile, deputy head for detectives Major-General Jeremy Veary and Anti-Gang Unit head Major- General Andre Lincoln.
Roads around the court were closed off as Nyalas were used to transport the trio as police officers stood guard both inside and outside of the court room.
During proceedings it was revealed that Modack faced three different sets of charges which relate to the alleged kidnapping of Sameer Valley, the attempted hit on Booth and a third set of charges relating to his arrested last week.
The matter was postponed to Friday for the cases to be consolidated while the trio will be held at Bellville Police Station.
Modack has not been charged with the murder of Cape Flats cop Liuentenant Charl Kinnear.
