A family of four has been left homeless after a car wash owner crashed into their shack.
Phaphama Venfolo says they had just left their Samora Machel home when the incident happened on Saturday around 2pm.
She claims the 40-year-old driver, only known as Siya, was drunk when he destroyed their home.
“I had just come home from work and the road was busy with lots of people walking and cars passing our home,” says Phaphama.
“I went to the shop and my nephew went to a different spaza because he said he wanted to buy bread.
“A few minutes after we all left, we were called and informed about the crash.
“When we arrived, the angry community members apprehended the driver.”
The shocked woman says the driver of the silver Toyota Verso was later set free.
“The people wanted to hit him but he asked to be set free so he could go and buy material to rebuild the hokkie,” she says.
“He left and he didn’t come back until yesterday morning, when he made the same promise.”
Phaphama says they lost almost everything in the accident.
“When we got to the scene, we noticed that the car had driven over the couches, TV and wardrobes.
“The fridge was bumped to the other side of the yard and is in pieces. We have no food, no furniture.
“And we know we are not going to get them back because the driver doesn’t work.”
Phaphama says Siya had taken a client’s car for a joyride.
“He has a car wash a street away from us and we have never seen him drive a day in his life and everyone is still shocked that he did that,” she says.
“There were four of them in the car and the owner was at home, he was told about the incident. He came to get his vehicle later when the police were on the scene.”
When the Daily Voice went to speak to Siya, he would only say: “The case is with the police, I told the family I would rebuild their home and I don’t want to say anything more.”
Police did not respond to queries.
