A brazen gang of armed robbers went on a five-hour shopping spree at a local mall.
The gang of 30 broke into the larney Gugulethu Square, famous for its fabulous festive season rooftop parties, where they tied up the security guards and looted several shops.
While everyone was having a jol on New Year’s Eve, the skelms helped themselves to cellphones, clothing, furniture and dop.
Police say the gang was armed and wore balaclavas and gloves to disguise themselves.
They gained entry through the roof of the security control room at 11pm, and threatened the two guards inside.
They instructed them to call in the other securities who were patrolling the mall.
They assaulted the guards and then tied them up with cable ties and handcuffs.
While the guards were being watched, the others went on a rampage.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk says: “The suspects then broke into about five shops; two clothing shops, a cell shop, a furniture store including a liquor store.
“They stole cellphones, clothing, plasma TVs, liquor and even grinded open a safe in one of the cell shops, [this went on] for five whole hours.
“Gugulethu SAPS Detectives are investigating a case of a business robbery.”
The guards managed to push their alarm panic button after the robbers left at 4am on Sunday.
