Lead singer of The Rockets, Theo Watt, has dropped a bombshell this week when he announced he is leaving the band after 31 years.
The 50-year-old frontman says he has decided to pursue a solo career.
“My heart will always be a Rocket. But I felt the time was right for me to move on,” he tells the Daily Voice.
He joined the group when the legendary Colin “Bones” Delight left 31 years ago.
Theo is known for his slick Michael Jackson dance moves and thanked The Rockets.
“I was 19 when I joined them. We toured with lots of international stars, such as Usher, The Manhattans [and] Atlantic Star.
“At the age of 7, I started to sing, sometimes even with bands at the club. After that, I started taking part in Michael Jackson competitions and I won a lot because I could sing and dance.”
Now he is ready for his next big move, and he is already in studio recording his debut album.
“I felt I wanted to go on my own because I had the desire to record my own CDs and to put my own personal message in the songs that I am going to write and that I have already finished writing.”
Theo admits leaving The Rockets was a daunting prospect.
“I had to think long and hard, but I made the decision on my 50th birthday. I told the guys a month ago ‘listen, no hard feelings, but I feel to do this on my own, to go solo’.”
Band member and Theo’s uncle, Jerry Watt, says they have a new singer, Mario Losper.
“I wish Theo well. He wanted to try things on his own and I grant him that,” says Jerry.
