Kariema Taliep Davids is proof that dreams delayed are not dreams denied.
At 53 years old, the mother of two from Wetton has self-published her first book, called Haniyah and the Pink Rabbit.
Publishing a book has been her childhood dream and now it has come true, she says.
“I used to send in poems, stories and drawings and could not wait to see it published in the Cape Argus back in the day,” she says.
While raising her two boys, who are now 33 and 26, her dream was put on the backburner.
“Life gets so busy when you are married and one always has to postpone,” she says.
“Then I had my grandkids and now I am reading to them. The little ones just inspired me, so it all came back to me.”
The storybook is about a little girl who saved up money to buy her pink rabbit a house, but then she saw a little boy who wanted something and his dad could not afford it.
Karima says the book is all about teaching laaities morals and values.
“So the moral of the story is caring and sharing, and what you put in is you get out.”
The title of the book was also inspired by one of her granddaughters.
“I do so many things with the little Haniyah. I let her join the Lansdowne library and she loves to go pick her own books and when we read she can tell the story back to me.
