In light of recent shootings in which innocent children and residents have been harmed or killed, a former police captain has appealed to local artists to record a song that advises people how to react when shots are fired near them.
Keith Blake says the lesson of his song Val Plat as die Skote Klap, could save lives, and adding a lekker beat to his lyrics will help in spreading it to everybody in the Kaap.
“Having been a police officer for 30 years, one of the first things we were taught is that when shots are fired, you must fall flat because it eliminates the risk of being hit by bullets.
“We see how people are struck by bullets when they are walking down the road or sitting in the house, but if they fall flat, they can save their lives.”
The former captain at the Table Bay Harbour Police Station has reached out to artists to add a beat to his lyrics but says he is looking for something with mass appeal.
“The message must be val plat as die skote klap and if a song can be made that can play on the radio, at schools and churches, it can help.
“I spend a lot of time at the Freedom Park informal settlement in Ottery and I have taught those words to the kids.
“They even made a dance for it so I know it can be popular.”
