A Tafelsig dancer is giving “old-timers” another chance to shine by featuring them in a new music video.
Shamieg George, 28, currently features on various dance shows and music videos in Cape Town and says he has been privileged to work with local musicians, but now feels obligated to give back to the legends who paved the way for him and other dancers.
He found some iconic ’90s freestyle dancers to create a dance video and says: “Back then, there were so many crews, but it wasn't easy because some crews did not host competitions due to a lack of sponsorships.
“They had to create their own platform and do small competitions or just dance-offs in backyards or tiny community centres for a chance to show off their kwaai moves.
“Freestyle dancing wasn't seen as anything serious back then, they didn't get the recognition they deserved.
“Some of them are 33, 45 and 48 today and they were grateful to be honoured by being part of this legends video.”
The video launches on Friday, 21 May at Las Vegas Lounge at 7pm, and features dancers like Nic Mathee and Melrick, aka Mekkie.
Nic, 36, is now a dad of three, while Mekkie, 33, says he had to give up his dream and was happy to be part of the video.
“Dancing wasn't going to pay the bills and so I had to give it up when I turned 20.”
