Staff at Groote Schuur Hospital were treated to a concert on Wednesday, in the first of a five-week campaign called Appreciation Wednesdays - Concert of Gratitude for the Heroes of GSH.
To show appreciation for their hard work during the pandemic, a variety of tributes has been arranged for staff at GSH during the year.
To end the year in style, keep spirits high and usher in the festive season, the hospital is hosting five lunchtime music shows, in partnership with Brukman Consulting.
Artists doing it for the frontline health staff include Candice Thornton, Jeod House, Zeldene McDonald, PJ Twins and Fagri Isaacs.
Bridgette Brukman says: “We are so honoured to be part of Appreciation Wednesdays, to be able to celebrate the heroes that have worked tirelessly during this pandemic.
“For our artists to be able to share their gift and hopefully bring joy and a smile to the very people who have stood by many, held their hand, offered words of love and support in a time when families couldn't be there. We salute them and say thank you.”
Nurse Berenice Liebenberg told the Daily Voice: “Music boosts my mood, I forget about stress and it reduces my anxiety levels. After attending a concert, you feel like going on working more effectively.”
Wednesday, Candice Thornton kept the staff entertained as she belted out R&B and pop tunes.
She says: “I had such a great time.
“They are an interactive crowd ready to dance and sing with every song you do and I was even happier to see my granny who is a patient at this hospital and who’s been awaiting her hip replacement surgery since Monday.”
GSH spokesperson Alaric Jacobs said it’s been a tough year for healthcare workers who need all the love and appreciation they can get.
“This has been a tough year for health workers, not just for staff at GSH, but for all.
“We have some top artists coming to perform for our staff (in the coming weeks).
“We look forward to the staff coming to relax at the shows and just feel appreciated.”
