Cape Town-based musician Earl John recently released his latest single called Energy.
The 31-year-old singer, who was born in Port Elizabeth says his latest pop song is based on his life.
The singer says from 2016 to 2018 he battled a lung infection and feared he may never sing again.
Earl says both of his lungs collapsed on two separate occasions.
“The EP brings together different elements of me from my taste in music as an artist to telling my story about my recent health battles and overcoming many obstacles in my life,” he says.
“On 21 September 2016, after doing my morning chores, I felt weak and was rushed to hospital only to discover my lung collapsed.”
He says he recovered and five months later landed a gig in Spain.
But while performing there, his other lung gave in.
“On the night of 3 October 2017, I was on stage and the evening went really well,” he says.
“Just before we closed off the first 45 minute set of our show, I realised that I couldn’t finish my lines as I was singing and it became really difficult to breath.
“My other lung collapsed and I had to undergo surgery in Spain.”
Earl had corrective surgery in February 2018 and says miraculously up till today he hasn’t had any problems with his longe.
“The surgery allowed me to continue my life. Now I’m not gonna lie, this thing left a fear in me, that it might happen again, but I choose to ignore these fears.”
In Energy he sings: “Flashes of my weakness brings me to the ground, don’t wanna talk about it, move on forget about it, it’s just a shame that this game has no truth about it, cause this is life, this is love, this is how it will be.”
Energy is available on all digital platforms.
