A Mitchells Plain mom of two is desperately seeking financial assistance to get her champion daughter to Pietermaritzburg next week for the Athletics South Africa competition.
Cadem Young, 10, from New Tafelsig is in Grade 4 at Hazeldene Primary and recently broke the Champs of Champs and WP Provincial record for shot put.
She broke the WP record of 8.37m by “putting” the 2kg lead ball an impressive 9.31m.
Cadem’s mom Chrizelda Young says she is proud of her daughter’s achievement but is unable to afford the trip.

“This isn’t something I was prepared for, but I have to make it happen for her,” the mom says.
“She is the first in the family to make it to the ASA level, her brother also runs but only makes it to Western Province, so this is big for our family.
“I’ve been a single mom for 10 years and I believe God won’t give us something we can’t handle.
“Cadem was selected to represent Western Province at the ASA in Pietermaritzburg.
“She needs R5000 to cover the cost of transport and accommodation, she is still small and I would like to go with her but it would be too much to afford.
“I never knew she would excel in sports to this extent so I’m here to nurture the talent as far as she wants to go.”
She says Cadem’s talent was discovered by a school teacher when she took part in her interschool athletics competition and came first out of 10 schools.
“She then went through to the champs where she broke the record and last week at WP Athletics, she got gold again and now going through to ASA championships in Pietermaritzburg on 18 March.”
