Police are investigating a double murder after two alleged skollies were beaten and set alight in Hillview, Lavender Hill.
Residents in the area say they heard people fighting during the early hours of Saturday morning and later saw an angry mob set two people alight.
One resident, who did not want to be named, told Weekend Argus: “There were four people they were chasing and two got away.”
Two people were beaten and left for dead behind a container on an open field adjacent to St Patrick’s Avenue.
The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said they responded to the incident shortly after 7am: “The body/bodies were burnt beyond recognition and sandwiched between two mattresses.”
Ambulance personnel extinguished the blaze.
Police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana says a double murder case has been opened for investigation.
“The incident is under investigation and we urge anyone with information that can assist our investigation to contact Crime Stop,” she says.
It is alleged the victims were skollies who were killed in a mob justice attack.
A resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, said: “Those two were gangsters and they were caught breaking into someone’s house.”
She said throughout the night, residents could be heard on the streets, going door to door searching for the thieves.
The women said she thought the two people had been beaten and left for dead on the field, and it was just before sunrise when the mob returned and started the fire.
